The Right Dose of Technology
Denise Culver | Research Analyst
Doctors nationwide are increasingly adopting electronic medial records, driven in large part by government mandates to improve communication and information sharing.

As government regulations pressure every member of the healthcare ecosystem to provide critical data as quickly and securely as possible, their need to implement technology like MPLS VPN will increase.

Healthcare Sector Turns to MPLS VPNs for a Data Cure
There's little question that members of the healthcare ecosystem – hospitals, clinics, doctors, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and researchers – agree that the move toward electronic protected health information (ePHI), electronic medical records (EMRs) and electronic health records (EHRs) is a necessity. However, the overriding concern from every member of the healthcare ecosystem is who will carry the burden of paying for such technology.

Putting off such decisions isn't an option for much longer. By 2014, electronic records for all patients are mandated as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It created financial incentives for physicians and hospitals that use EMRs. If they don't use electronic devices by 2015, the government will reduce Medicare reimbursements.

Such governmental pressure is one reason that multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs) are increasingly in demand by healthcare organizations, especially those that need to link multiple geographically diverse business locations, such as hospitals, clinics and insurance providers.

Another key factor for the healthcare vertical is that – unlike the Internet – MPLS VPN has integrated security, and performance characteristics of the network are carefully controlled, providing exceptional security and converge for voice, data and video onto a single network. Additionally, MPLS networks have class of service (CoS) mechanisms that ensure outstanding quality of service (QoS) to control bandwidth, latency, jitter and packet loss.

But the scalability of MPLS lets IT request additional resources, as well as add and delete locations from the service provider in the cloud. While there is no magic pill that will cure the pain that members of the healthcare ecosystem are facing in terms of having to invest in technology over the coming months, the fact is that MPLS VPN is a solid investment strategy with long-term benefits and the ability to meet the unique needs of the healthcare industry.

There is no doubt that the healthcare market is becoming more complex in terms of the amount of data that various members of the healthcare ecosystem are expected to share and provide over the Internet. As the government continues to pressure every member of the healthcare ecosystem to provide that information as quickly and securely as possible, the need for healthcare providers to implement technology like MPLS VPN will increase.

Healthcare Sector Turns to MPLS VPNs for a Data Cure examines the MPLS VPN market, analyzing the healthcare verticals that are most likely to utilize MPLS VPN over the next two years, as well drivers and challenges in the industry. It includes a comparative analysis of solutions available and examines the geographic landscape of the market and trends that are likely to occur in the industry over the next 18-24 months.
Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:
Table of Contents (ipsi0312_toc.pdf)
As shown in the following excerpt, all the healthcare verticals will be making healthy investments in MPLS VPN over the next two years. To some extent, this trend is not surprising. After all, every member of the healthcare ecosystem bears some burden in terms of meeting the government's demand for accessibility and safety of patient information.
