SMBs Key Market for SIP Trunking
Denise Culver | Research Analyst
Despite lingering questions about QoS, enterprises are becoming more comfortable with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking as a low-cost alternative to legacy telecom services.

This change will result in a growth in deployment from 8.5 million SIP trunks in 2009 to 24.3 million trunks in 2013.

SIP Trunking Gains More Ground With SMBs
In its simplest form, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is a service offered by an Internet telephony service provider (ITSP) that permits businesses with an installed private branch exchange (PBX) to use voice over IP (VoIP) outside the enterprise network by using the same connection as the Internet connection. As such, SIP trunking is a simple way for organizations to accomplish something that they have already but for less money, with equal or better quality, and with greater functionality.

Cost savings achieved through SIP trunking come in many forms: SIP trunks can be purchased in single-trunk increments, as compared to 23-channel increments for a PRI. They enable a single network to be maintained within an organization, rather than maintaining separate voice and data networks. Internet bandwidth can be used more efficiently. And moves, adds, and changes can be completed without major wiring upgrades.

Many enterprises are hesitant to move to an IP-based network as a result of negative experiences with IP quality of service (QoS). Regardless of whether such experiences are first-hand, word-of-mouth, or media driven, SIP trunking providers must provide verifiable proof that their systems provide the same high quality and reliability that enterprise customers have come to expect from Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) services. When that happens, there is little question that enterprises of all sizes will view SIP trunking as a communications technology worth investing in for the future.

Much like the trend toward cloud-based IT, cloud-based voice services are gaining a foothold as Internet access prices drop and businesses become more comfortable with alternative service arrangements. The recent global economic crisis has renewed the interest in cloud-based offerings as companies and individuals looks for ways to lower communications costs and improve productivity.

As vendors work to better educate enterprises about the benefits and quality of SIP trunking, it will continue to displace legacy equipment and usher in new technologies and applications to improve business processes.
