GPON Market Forecast: The Horizon Beyond Verizon
Alcatel-Lucent has taken the early lead in the Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) market, at least in the Tier 1 carrier market. Other vendors have won more contracts and deployed a few thousand optical network terminals (ONTs) and optical line terminals (OLTs), but Alcatel-Lucent has stolen a march on rivals by securing bigger deals with Verizon and France Telecom that promise potential sales volumes that should dominate the market in the near future. It also has won projects to provide a number of smaller carriers, utilities, and municipal networks with GPON technology. The company is now looking to build on its early lead by publishing reference data to enable third-party vendors to develop compatible ONTs, and it argues that it is well on its way to achieving significant economies-of-scale advantages over rivals.

AlcaLu's early success comes as GPON deployment is starting to gather pace; deployment of GPON ONTs now numbers in the thousands, but is expected to reach into the millions over the next five years. Light Reading Insider estimates that the global market for GPON electronics could be worth players, early success may be critical to capturing the biggest chunks of that market share.

Although early GPON deployments are coming mainly in North America, Europe is poised to emerge as a major GPON market over the next three to five years. Light Reading Insider projects that GPON will be used for about half of all fiber-connected households in Europe by 2011. The outlook in Asia/Pacific is less bullish because of early deployment of Ethernet PON (EPON) networks there; about one third of fiber-connected households in Asia/Pacific will be GPON-based by 2011, Light Reading Insider estimates.

This report explores and analyzes the emerging GPON sector, including a five-year global market forecast for GPON equipment. It provides an overview of the PON taxonomy, focusing on the relative strengths and weaknesses of GPON and EPON options. GPON standardization efforts by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) group are evaluated. The report includes a competitive analysis of GPON initiatives from 12 different suppliers, and identifies the key points of comparison between GPON offerings. Finally, individual vendors are profiled and their GPON products and strategies analyzed.

Light Reading Insider expects the GPON market to generate significant equipment revenues over the next five years. We estimate the worldwide market for OLT and ONT equipment could be worth $4.7 billion a year by 2011. This projection is based on assumptions that ONT prices will fall below $200 in the forecast period, and that the cost of the OLT will fall below $100 per subscriber. The following figure shows Light Reading Insider's worldwide revenue projections for GPON equipment through 2011.
