In-building Cellular: Selling the Great Indoors
Mobile operators are turning to the latest generation of distributed antenna systems, RF repeaters, and IP-based pico base stations to deliver faster, more reliable, and more ubiquitous wireless services to indoor subscribers.

This report analyzes the impact of 3G, wireless LAN, and IP convergence on the in-building cellular market and investigates the business models that drive the indoor infrastructure investment case. The second part of the report profiles in-building equipment providers, including suppliers of distributed antenna systems, pico cells, and repeaters.

Demand for dedicated in-building coverage systems is set to surge, finds the report, as operators continue to push fixed/mobile substitution strategies in their quest for an ever-greater share of the telephony market. Demand is also being driven by the need for low-latency, high-speed 3G access networks, as wireless providers extend their reach into data services.

Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:

The table below presents a summary of distributed antenna systems (DAS). Historically single-carrier, passive DAS systems, based on RF over coaxial cable, dominated the market. Today, however, hybrid DAS systems, based on RF over fiber and coax or Cat5 cable, dominate, with multi-carrier support ever more important:
